  • Occasion: Bihe, bratabandha, engagement, wedding reception

A groom’s daura suruwal does not have to be loud to read as ceremonial. This one holds to a single ivory register and puts all its work into surface — a brocade woven in bold diamonds, and borders set with coloured stones and small mirrors that catch whatever light is in the room. Underneath it is the same cross-over tunic Nepali men have worn for generations, closed with ties rather than buttons.

The diamond lattice is woven into the cloth rather than printed on it, so the pattern shifts as the fabric moves. A band of cream embroidery runs along the collar, the wrap curve, the cuffs, the hem and the trouser ankles — geometric starbursts in fine thread, studded with red and green stones and mirror discs the size of a grain of rice. The kamarband carries the same work on the same ivory ground, a broad band beneath a narrower one. Only the shawl breaks the palette, in deep red velvet edged with the matching cream border, and the topi and mules answer it.

Grooms choose this version for a daytime ceremony, or when the bride’s outfit already carries red and gold and the two need to sit together rather than compete. The silhouette suits a bratabandha equally well. Each piece is tailor-made to your measurements — after ordering, Bhutib contacts you directly to confirm fit and preferences. The stone-setting and the embroidery are worked by hand in Kalimpong, one border at a time.
