Description

  • Fabric: Jacquard in a poly-silk blend, soft and silky against the skin
  • Woven motifs: Auspicious roundels — endless knot, longevity medallion, lotus and cloud scroll — the set changes with the colourway
  • Occasion: Losar, Saga Dawa, monastery visits, school cultural programmes and family weddings
  • Care: Dry clean preferred. Cool iron on the reverse, no bleach, dry in the shade

The Bakhu — Chuba in Tibetan — is the dress worn by Tibetan, Bhutia, Sherpa, Tamang and Bhutanese women, and children have always had their own version of it. This one-piece cut folds the Wonju inner blouse into the dress itself, so a child arrives fully dressed in a single garment instead of a layered set that has to be arranged on a restless five-year-old. It is the adult silhouette scaled down, not simplified.

The body is cut from jacquard in a poly-silk blend. The motifs are woven into the ground rather than printed onto it, so they surface only where the light turns, and the fabric stays smooth and cool under the hand — the sleeves are the softest part of the dress. Contrast brocade in ivory or white supplies everything a separate Wonju would, cut and joined into the dress rather than layered over it, so the whole reads as one garment instead of a jacket worn over a blouse.

A child in a Bakhu at a family gathering is not in costume — they are dressed the way the room is dressed, which is the point. Each piece is tailor-made to your measurements — after ordering, Bhutib contacts you directly to confirm fit and preferences. Children’s sizes are cut to the same standard as the adult ones.
