The dhaka topi is the Nepali topi most people picture: a brimless cap with a flat top that slopes down towards the back, worn with the daura suruwal on Dashain and Tihar, at weddings, and in the identity photographs of a whole generation of Nepali men. Dhaka cloth was first woven in the eastern hills around Tehrathum and in Palpa, and the topi carried its geometry to every community in Nepal and to the Nepali families of Darjeeling, Sikkim and the wider diaspora.
Here the pattern is printed rather than woven, so the chevrons, lattices and tile motifs sit on a smooth surface with no raised threads inside, and the cap weighs almost nothing. The crown is firm enough to keep its slope when the cap is set back on the head, with a single fold at the centre back where the two sides meet, and the edge is turned cleanly so it sits flat against the forehead.
Wear it with the high point set forward and the slope running back, over a daura suruwal or over a plain shirt on a festival morning; it belongs with the full range of Nepali topis in our shop. When the day calls for a plain cap instead, the black Gorkha topi with its khukuri badge is its formal cousin. Each topi is cut and stitched for Bhutib in a small workshop in the Eastern Himalayan hills.

Questions buyers ask
Is this a handwoven dhaka topi? No. The dhaka patterns are printed on cotton, which keeps the cap light and the price low. A handwoven Palpali or Tehrathum topi shows a raised pattern on the outside and loose floating threads on the inside; this one is smooth on both faces.
What size is it? One free size that fits adult heads. The crown is firm and the edge is turned, so it sits level without pressing on the forehead.
Can I wear it without a daura suruwal? Yes. On Dashain, at a wedding or on 1 January, Nepali Topi Day, it goes just as well over a shirt or a kurta. For a child or a closer fit, order the free size and give us the head measurement when Bhutib confirms your order, and we tailor-make the cap to that size.
