The daura gave Nepali men the band collar and the dhaka topi gave them the pattern. This shirt keeps both and stops the sleeves above the elbow, which is how the hills dress from the first warm weeks of spring through the monsoon. A short-sleeve shirt in dhaka print is what a man wears to the bazaar, to a daytime puja and to a cousin’s reception when the full daura suruwal would be too much, and it still reads as Nepali from across the street.

The cloth is a smooth plain-woven cotton with the stepped dhaka diamonds printed across it in red, navy and white, so the shirt stays light where a woven dhaka would be dense, and it washes like an ordinary shirt. The collar stands a finger high, the front closes on a concealed placket so the pattern runs unbroken, a patch pocket sits on the left chest, and the hem is cut straight to be worn outside the trousers. Each shirt is cut only after you order, and every piece is checked for fit, finishing and cultural accuracy before it ships. Each one is tailor-made to your measurements — after ordering, Bhutib contacts you directly to confirm fit and preferences.

Wear it over plain trousers with a dhaka topi on a Dashain morning, or on its own through the summer; it sits with the daura, topis and shirts of Nepali men’s dress. When the day calls for long sleeves and a spread collar, its long-sleeve cousin in a dhaka temple print is the one to pick. Each shirt is stitched for Bhutib in a small workshop in Kalimpong.

Garment type Short-sleeve shirt, band collar, concealed button placket, chest pocket
Cultural wear Nepali men, daytime festival and everyday wear: Dashain, Tihar, pujas, family functions
Styling With a dhaka topi and plain trousers; under a dhaka waistcoat for a dressier look

Questions buyers ask

Is this a daura? No. A daura wraps across the chest and closes along the side; this is a buttoned shirt that borrows the daura’s band collar and shortens the sleeves. For the wrap front, see our daura shirt.

Is the dhaka pattern woven or printed? Printed on cotton. A handwoven dhaka shows raised threads on the inside; this cloth is smooth on both faces, lighter, and easier to wash.

Can I wear it to a wedding? Yes, to the daytime functions. Add a dhaka topi and a waistcoat and it holds its own next to a daura suruwal.

Questions people actually ask

Will it fit if I’ve never been measured?

Yes. Choose your usual size. Before we cut, we message you on WhatsApp for two numbers — your chest or bust at the fullest part, and your height — and adjust the pattern to you. A tape and two minutes is all it takes.

What if it doesn’t fit when it arrives?

We alter it free. Courier it back to us in Kalimpong (that leg is on you); we adjust it and pay the courier back to you. Or take it to a tailor near you — every piece is cut with margin for a small local adjustment.

Is there anything to pay on top of the price?

No. Delivery is free across India and the price includes tax, so the amount you see is the amount you pay. Two exceptions, both quoted before you order: a size above 4XL carries a small surcharge for the extra cloth, and a personal customisation beyond a standard size is confirmed with a 10% advance on the order; the rest is paid on delivery, as usual.

Can I cancel, or change the size or colour?

Before we cut, yes — tell us on WhatsApp and nothing is lost. After cutting, the piece is made to your measurements and cannot go back into stock; if it does not fit, we alter it free.

I’m buying for someone I can’t measure — what do I do?

Choose their usual size and add their WhatsApp number in the order notes. We confirm the rest with them, or with you, before we cut.

Need a size we do not list?

We cut it. Smaller than the smallest size shown, larger than the largest, and for babies and children too. Message us the measurements on WhatsApp; for a child we need chest, shoulder-to-foot length and sleeve length. Above 4XL the extra cloth carries a small surcharge, quoted before you pay.

Can it come faster?

Sometimes. Tell us your date before you order and, if a faster courier reaches your pincode, we quote the difference. Either way, tell us the date and we cut yours first.

Will it reach me before my date?

Allow 6–9 working days from the day you confirm your measurements, anywhere in India, a little longer for remote pincodes. Tell us the date in the order notes or on WhatsApp and we plan around it.

Do you ship outside India?

Not through this website yet; it ships within India only. Message us on WhatsApp and we will arrange it, or order from our Etsy shop, which ships worldwide with free shipping.

Is the colour the same as the photo?

The photos are of the actual cloth in daylight; screens differ a little. To be sure, ask us on WhatsApp for a photo of the cloth before we cut.
